  • Total Time: 45 minutes
  • Yield: Serves approximately 8 pretzels 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ cups warm water (110°F)
  • 2 ¼ tsp active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ cup baking soda (for the bath)
  • Coarse sea salt (for topping)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mix warm water and sugar. Sprinkle yeast on top and let sit for 5 minutes until foamy. Add salt and gradually incorporate flour until a sticky dough forms.
  2. Knead the dough on a floured surface for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place in an oiled bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let rise in a warm spot for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  3. Punch down the risen dough and divide into smaller pieces. Roll each piece into ropes and twist into pretzel shapes on lined baking sheets.
  4. Boil water in a large pot and carefully add baking soda. Boil each pretzel for 30 seconds on each side before placing back on the baking sheets.
  5. Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C). Brush boiled pretzels with egg wash and sprinkle with coarse salt. Bake for 12-15 minutes until golden brown.
