Ingredients

  • 6 cups whole milk
  • 2 cups heavy whipping cream
  • 1 can (14 oz) sweetened condensed milk
  • 2 cups (12 oz) high-quality semi-sweet chocolate chips (or chopped chocolate bars)
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened Dutch-process cocoa powder (sifted)
  • 2 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp fine sea salt (essential to cut sweetness and enhance cocoa depth)
  • to serve mini marshmallows, whipped cream, crushed candy canes, chocolate shavings

Method

  1. Combine Liquids in Slow Cooker: In a 6-quart oval slow cooker, pour in whole milk, heavy whipping cream, and the full can of sweetened condensed milk. Whisk gently until combined.
  2. Add Chocolate & Cocoa: Whisk in sifted Dutch-process cocoa powder, pure vanilla extract, and fine sea salt until cocoa is mostly incorporated. Add the semi-sweet chocolate chips directly into the liquid.
  3. Slow Cook on Low: Cover the slow cooker with the lid. Cook on LOW heat setting for 2 hours, whisking every 30 to 40 minutes to ensure the melting chocolate chips integrate smoothly and do not settle on the bottom.
  4. Switch to Warm: Once the chocolate has completely melted and the mixture is glossy, steaming, and silky-smooth, switch the slow cooker to the "WARM" setting.
  5. Set Up Hot Chocolate Bar & Serve: Set out mugs, a ladle, and toppings: mini marshmallows, whipped cream, peppermint sticks, cinnamon sticks, and shaved chocolate. Ladle into mugs and enjoy warm!
