Ingredients
  

Onion
  • 1 large onion preferably a sweet onion
Batter
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 tablespoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
Oil
  • 2 quarts vegetable oil for frying

Preparation
  1. Cut the top off the onion and peel it. Make deep cuts in a star pattern around the onion, being careful not to cut all the way through.
  2. Soak the onion in cold water for at least 30 minutes to help it bloom.
Batter and Frying
  1. In a mixing bowl, combine flour, buttermilk, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper to create the batter.
  2. Heat the oil in a deep fryer to 375°F (190°C).
  3. Dip the bloomed onion in the batter, ensuring it is fully coated.
  4. Carefully place the battered onion in the hot oil and fry for about 10-15 minutes until golden brown.
  5. Remove from oil and drain on paper towels.
